Press Release | Telework Association supports National Commute Smart Day
The Telework Association applauds the introduction by WorkWiseUK of National Commute Smart Day. We particularly welcome the recognition that working at home part of the time is a means of reducing both traffic congestion and CO2 emissions. If every car commuter travelled to work only four days out of five, around 2 million fewer tonnes of CO2 per year would be pumped into our atmosphere.
For many years the Telework Association has been promoting home working as beneficial for individuals, for businesses, for the UK economy and for the environment. Whilst the economic reality of green taxes, as per the Stern report, may encourage changes in behaviour that will slow down climate change, people are more likely to respond if they can see some personal benefit rather than simply the avoidance of taxes. Individuals working from home some of the time benefit by achieving a better work life balance. Businesses benefit by having less stressed, more productive employees, reducing absence and incurring fewer recruitment costs. The UK economy benefits from greater productivity and UK society from reduced congestion. And of course the environment benefits because less pollution is generated.
So the Telework Association will be seeking active ways of supporting National Commute Smart Day next year and in the meantime will continue to lobby for greater recognition for, and promotion of, the widespread benefits of home working,

Background:
The Telework Association is a membership organisation providing information, advice and support to enable individuals, whether employed or self employed, to make a success of mobile, home-based and flexible ways of working. We also support managers who are implementing these working practices and now work in collaboration with the Future Work Forum at Henley Management College to enhance our services to organisations.
The Telework Association is Europe's largest organisation dedicated to the promotion of all forms of teleworking and over 7,000 people and organisations have joined us since we started in 1993. We believe that these new ways of working can benefit people by increasing the quality of life and improving access to work, as well as delivering significant business benefits to the organisations that implement them.
